Aldo works at a sugar refinery in a town on the Po plain in northern Italy and has lived for seven years with Irma, with whom he has a young daughter. The news that Irma's husband, long since emigrated to Australia, has died appears to clear the way for the couple to marry, but Irma no longer wants Aldo and turns away from him. He gives up his job and sets out with the child across the Italian north, drifting from one woman to another in search of someone who might fill the place Irma left vacant. Among them are Elvia, a figure out of his past, Virginia, who runs a petrol station and cares for her elderly father, and Andreina, a prostitute hoping to start her life over elsewhere.

Michelangelo Antonioni directed and co-wrote the film with Elio Bartolini and Ennio De Concini. It is the third of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order, following The Vanquished and preceding L'Avventura, and it was produced by Franco Cancellieri for SPA Cinematografica and Robert Alexander Productions. Steve Cochran plays Aldo, with Alida Valli as Irma and Dorian Gray, Jacqueline Jones, Gabriella Pallotta and Pina Boldrini in supporting roles. The film runs 115 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6/10 from around 5,900 votes, and on TMDB 7.5/10 from 171 votes, a close agreement between the two audiences. A critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 14 reviews sits at much the same level.
