Kuso takes place in Los Angeles after a devastating earthquake, following survivors as they navigate the wreckage of their lives. Strange events unfold in the aftermath, and the film moves between the characters through a makeshift broadcast network assembled from discarded television sets, with the story told across screens and continuing aftershocks. The film blends animation with live action across comedy, drama, fantasy and horror.
It marks the feature directing debut of Flying Lotus, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Firth and Zack Fox. The cast includes Iesha Rochelle, Oumi Zumi, David Firth, George Clinton, Byron Bowers and Zack Fox, with 43 credited performers in total. Eddie Alcazar produced for Brainfeeder Films.
Flying Lotus went on to direct segments within the V/H/S/99 (2022) and V/H/S/Mixtape (2026) anthologies, along with Ash (2025), making Kuso the first of the four directing credits listed for him in chronological order. The film runs 94 minutes and was released in January 2017. It holds a rating of 4.8/10 on IMDb from around 2,100 votes, and 5.4/10 on TMDB from a much smaller voter pool of about 70.
