Violet Evergarden: The Movie

Violet Evergarden: The Movie continues the story of its title character, a former child soldier who now works as an Auto Memory Doll, writing letters on behalf of clients. Several years after the war that left deep scars on her and those around her, society is recovering and new technology is changing daily life. Violet has built a career at a postal company, but she remains unable to let go of Gilbert, her former commanding officer, and still holds out hope that he is alive. A letter that turns up unexpectedly revives that hope and sets her on a path that could change her future.

The film is directed by Taichi Ishidate, who had previously directed the two Beyond the Boundary features and Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, and later directed Violet Evergarden: Recollections. Reiko Yoshida wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Yui Ishikawa as Violet, Daisuke Namikawa as Gilbert, Takehito Koyasu and Hidenobu Kiuchi, along with Haruka Tomatsu and Koki Uchiyama. Kyoto Animation produced the film with Lantis, ABC Animation and Pony Canyon.

Released in September 2020, the film runs 140 minutes and took in roughly 20 million dollars worldwide. It is rated 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 14,000 votes and 8.3 out of 10 on TMDB from 544 votes, while a critics' rating of 9.2 out of 10 from 10 reviews places it slightly above those audience scores.
