What's left behind the scenes

Initially, director Tahiti Ishidate did not want to direct a sequel. He was convinced that he had already said everything he wanted to in the 2018 anime series. However, after reading the script written by Reiko Yoshida, he changed his mind.
The film was originally scheduled to premiere on January 10, 2020, but the premiere was postponed due to a fire at Kyoto Animation studio.
