One from the Heart

Set over one night in Las Vegas, One from the Heart follows Hank and Frannie, a couple whose fifth anniversary ends in an argument and a breakup. Each goes off alone into the neon-lit city: Hank becomes involved with Leila, a circus performer, while Frannie is courted by Ray, a pianist and singer. Their separate nights unfold against a stylized, studio-built version of Las Vegas, and by morning the two must weigh their new encounters against the life they had built together. The film stars Frederic Forrest and Teri Garr, with Raúl Juliá, Nastassja Kinski, Lainie Kazan and Harry Dean Stanton in supporting roles. Francis Ford Coppola directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Armyan Bernstein and Luana Anders.

The film was released in February 1982, arriving between Apocalypse Now and The Outsiders as the seventh of Coppola's twenty-six directing credits to date. Made for a budget of 26 million dollars, it is remembered for its highly artificial visual style and for a soundtrack by Tom Waits, and it proved a costly commercial disappointment for its studio backers.
