Queen Elizabeth I is transported from her own era to England in the late 1970s by the occultist John Dee. What she finds is a country in decline, its social order collapsed and its streets ruled by nihilistic gangs. Among the figures she encounters are Amyl Nitrate, Bod, Chaos, Crabs and Mad, whose lives play out against a landscape of decay and disorder.
Derek Jarman directed and wrote the film, which was produced by Howard Malin and James Whaley. It was the second of the feature films he directed, following Tarot in 1972 and preceding Caravaggio in 1986. The cast includes Jenny Runacre as both Queen Elizabeth I and Bod, Nell Campbell as Crabs, Toyah Willcox as Mad, Pamela Rooke as Amyl Nitrite, Ian Charleson as Angel and Karl Johnson as Sphinx, with 35 performers credited in total.
Jubilee runs 106 minutes and mixes comedy, drama, fantasy and music. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 82 votes. The two audience scores are close, though the larger IMDb sample suggests a fairly mixed response. The film was released in February 1978.
