Ogami Itto, the shogunate executioner turned wandering assassin, travels with his young son Daigoro as he seeks revenge against the clan that destroyed his family. In this fifth entry of the series, five warriors of the Kuroda clan each confront him in single combat before revealing the assignment they carry. Each holds one portion of his fee and one portion of the information he needs, so he must defeat all of them before the full task becomes clear. The mission draws him into a dispute within the Kuroda domain and into conflict with the Yagyu clan, who want the matter settled for their own ends, while the powerful lord Retsudo pursues him with a large force.
Kenji Misumi directed, as he had the first, second and third films in the series, with Kazuo Koike and Tsutomu Nakamura writing the screenplay. Tomisaburo Wakayama stars as Ogami Itto and also produced, alongside Masanori Sanada; Akihiro Tomikawa plays Daigoro. Michiyo Yasuda, Shingo Yamashiro, Tomomi Sato and Akira Yamanouchi are among the credited cast of twenty-two.
Released in Japan in August 1973 and running eighty-nine minutes, the film carries an IMDb rating of 7.5 from around five thousand votes and a TMDB rating of 7.2 from about a hundred and forty. Audience response places it among the more appreciated entries in the series.
