Short description

Set in seventeenth-century France, this adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's adventure novel follows the young Gascon D'Artagnan as he travels to Paris hoping to join the king's musketeers. On his first day in the capital he quarrels with three of the regiment's finest swordsmen, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, but the dispute is cut short by the arrival of guards loyal to Cardinal Richelieu. Fighting alongside the men he had just offended earns him their friendship, and the four are soon drawn into the cardinal's schemes against King Louis XIII, including a plot involving Queen Anne and the beautiful, dangerous Milady de Winter.

George Sidney directed the film, the sixth in the chronological list of his features, following Anchors Aweigh and Ziegfeld Follies and preceding Show Boat. Robert Ardrey wrote the screenplay and Pandro S. Berman produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Gene Kelly plays D'Artagnan, with Lana Turner as Lady De Winter, June Allyson as Constance, Van Heflin as Athos, Gig Young as Porthos and Angela Lansbury as Queen Ann. Twenty-nine performers are credited.

The production had a budget of four million dollars and took in the same amount worldwide, so it recouped its costs rather than turning a profit at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 7,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from 164 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from twelve reviews places it slightly below the audience scores recorded on IMDb.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Fearing outrage from Catholics, MGM Studios carefully avoided mentioning that Richelieu was a cardinal.
  • During the filming of a scene in the bedroom, Gene Kelly (1912-1996) threw Lana Turner (1921-1995) onto the bed with such force that she fell to the floor and broke her arm.
