Mike Shea, a young man from a small Pennsylvania town, sets out for California on his own after his girlfriend Brenda decides to stay behind and marry someone else. On the road he stops at the scene of a car accident and rescues a woman and her children from a river, but he drowns in the attempt. He wakes in Heaven, where his Aunt Lisa helps him settle in, and he falls in love with Annie Packert, a soul who has not yet been born. When Annie departs for her life on Earth, Mike follows her, and the two are reborn with no memory of what they were to each other.
Alan Rudolph directed the film, which sits between Choose Me (1984) and The Moderns (1988) in his filmography. Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon wrote the screenplay and produced alongside David Blocker. Timothy Hutton plays Mike, Kelly McGillis plays Annie, and Maureen Stapleton, Ann Wedgeworth, James Gammon and Mare Winningham appear in supporting roles.
Released in November 1987, the film runs 103 minutes and mixes comedy, drama, fantasy and romance. Against a budget of about 13 million dollars it earned roughly 5 million worldwide, a poor return. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 4,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 89 votes, indicating modest but persistent interest.
