Macabéa is a naive young woman from northeastern Brazil who moves to São Paulo following the death of the aunt who raised her. Now living in a boarding house and working as a typist, she spends her free time listening to the radio and riding the metro. Her simple life changes when she begins a romantic relationship with Olímpico, a fellow northeastern worker who aspires to become a congressman. The story focuses on the contrast between Macabéa's innocent nature and the indifference and cruelty of the urban environment.
