Bobo is a longshoreman living on a barge in San Pablo, where he sells fish bait and struggles with heavy drinking. After a night of drunken carousing he wakes with no memory of what happened, tormented by the suspicion that he may have killed a man during a brawl on the waterfront. Around the same time he rescues a young woman named Anna from the sea after she tries to take her own life, and brings her back to the barge. The two fall in love and plan to marry, though a parasite named Tiny, who has been blackmailing Bobo, complicates their hopes.
Archie Mayo directed the film, which came after Black Legion and before Angel on My Shoulder. John O'Hara wrote the screenplay, and Mark Hellinger produced it for 20th Century Fox. Jean Gabin plays Bobo and Ida Lupino plays Anna, with Thomas Mitchell as Tiny, Claude Rains as Nutsy and Jerome Cowan as Dr. Frank Brothers among a credited cast of 34. The film runs 94 minutes and mixes drama, romance and thriller elements.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 2,600 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.4 from a much smaller number of votes.
