Querelle is a crime drama about a sailor who arrives in the French port of Brest and becomes entangled in the underworld surrounding a brothel. He finds his brother Robert involved with Lysiane, the woman who runs the establishment, and encounters her husband Nono, whose gambling arrangement dictates the sexual encounters that take place there. Querelle, who smuggles drugs and is drawn into violence, becomes the object of desire for several people around him while pursuing his own dangerous interests. The film is based on Jean Genet's novel Querelle of Brest.
Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Burkhard Driest. It came late in his directing career, following Lili Marleen and released the same year as Veronika Voss. Brad Davis plays Querelle, with Franco Nero as Lieutenant Seblon, Jeanne Moreau as Lysiane, Laurent Malet as Roger Bataille, Hanno Pöschl as Robert and Gil, and Günther Kaufmann as Nono. The production, made in Germany and France, had a budget of about 2 million dollars and involved 23 credited cast members and 55 credited crew.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 14 reviews, while on TMDB it has an audience rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 221 votes. The two scores sit close together, suggesting a similar level of appreciation from critics and general viewers.
