The original title of the film is "Bobby Deerfield."
Before filming this movie, Al Pacino didn't know how to drive. To film scenes where his character drives a racing car, he had to take driving lessons.
In the racing scenes, Al Pacino was doubled by José Carlos Pace (1944-1977), a Brazilian racing driver. He died in a plane crash in early 1977 at the age of 32. The film is dedicated to his memory.
Preparing for the role of the ailing Lillian, actress Marta Keller would wake up at 6 a.m. every morning, eat a lettuce leaf, go to thermal baths, drink a glass of carrot juice, ride a bicycle, and play tennis for an hour. Sometimes she would play a second set of tennis until 9 a.m. Keller lost almost 5 kilograms.
