Short description

Set in eighteenth-century France, this drama follows Suzanne, a young woman forced by her family to enter a convent against her will. While inside, she struggles to maintain her independence and resists the strict religious canons. Her experience is defined by her relationships with three different mothers superior, whose treatment of her varies from maternal care and sadistic abuse to unwanted sexual desire. Even after moving to another convent to escape her tormentors, Suzanne continues to fight for her freedom.

The film was directed by Jacques Rivette, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jean Gruault. In the timeline of Rivette's work, this production follows Le quadrille and precedes Céline and Julie Go Boating and La Belle Noiseuse. The cast features Anna Karina in the lead role, alongside Liselotte Pulver, Micheline Presle, Francine Bergé, Francisco Rabal, and Christiane Lénier.

The movie has been well received by both audiences and professional reviewers. It holds a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb based on 3,500 votes and 7.1/10 on TMDB from 107 votes. Film critics gave it a higher score of 8.4/10 across 21 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Even during filming, attempts were repeatedly made to ban the film. Associations of parents of students from independent schools (APEL) collected tens of thousands of signatures on a petition against the film. In 1966, the French Minister of Culture banned the screening of “The Nun.” However, this did not prevent the film from passing the selection committee of the Cannes Film Festival. A paradoxical situation arose: in 1966, France was represented at the festival by a film banned in France itself. The ban was lifted a year later.
  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Denis Diderot.
