Capone follows Alphonse "Al" Capone in the year after his release from prison, when he is 47 and living on a Florida estate under the watch of federal agents. The former Chicago crime boss has been weakened by syphilis-related dementia, and his memories of a violent career intrude on his present. With his mental state declining, he struggles to recall where he hid a large sum of money before his arrest, while his family and others around him try to hold the household together.
Tom Hardy plays Capone, with Linda Cardellini as his wife Mae, Matt Dillon as Johnny, Kyle MacLachlan as Doctor Karlock, Kathrine Narducci as Rosie and Jack Lowden as Crawford. Josh Trank wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Lawrence Bender, Aaron L. Gilbert and Russell Ackerman among a credited crew of 56, and features 31 credited cast members. It was made on a budget of roughly 21 million US dollars.
Capone is the third feature Trank directed, following Chronicle and Fantastic Four. Released in June 2020, it was poorly received by both critics and audiences, with a film critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 140 reviews, an IMDb score of 4.7 from around 25,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 5.1 from 467 votes. The three measures sit close together, indicating broad agreement that the film fell short of expectations.
