Short description
Set in the year 2100, this story takes place after humans have abandoned Earth. In the deepest parts of the ocean, a colony of sea creatures lives in a protected area. When an accident destroys their home, a daring octopus named Deep and his companions are forced to travel across the ocean to find a new place to live. Along their journey, the group faces various enemies and dangers.
This animated family adventure was directed by Julio Soto Gurpide, marking the first of three films he has directed. It was a co-production involving companies from Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, China, the United States, and Switzerland. The voice cast includes Justin Felbinger, Jess Harnell, Phil LaMarr, Dwight Schultz, Elisabeth Gray, and Anna Vocino.
The film was produced on a budget of 6 million USD and earned 11 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, as reflected in the ratings. On IMDb, the film has a score of 4.2/10 based on 1,624 votes, while on TMDB it holds a higher rating of 5.9/10 from 160 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The shrimp Alice is shown as a very impulsive character in the cartoon for a reason. In the real animal world, the shrimp is the noisiest creature in the ocean. The noise from a large school of shrimp can "blind" the sonar of a submarine.
- The anglerfish Ivo got its name from the glowing "fishing rod with bait," which is a growth on its head. It is also known as the "sea devil." It lures its prey with an elongated spine, bending it around the bait, while the end of the spine glows to attract unsuspecting fish to its mouth and sharp teeth. Their mouths are so large, and their bodies so flexible, that they can swallow prey twice their size.
- The Grimteuthis octopus species, represented by the main character, Dinky, lives in the depths of the ocean and has been found at depths of up to 7,000 meters. Usually, these octopuses reach a length of 20 centimeters when mature, but the largest specimen of this genus ever recorded was about 180 centimeters long and weighed about 6 kilograms. In addition to its scientific name, this species of octopus is also called Dumbo, due to the formations on its head resembling the ears of the elephant from the Disney cartoon of the same name.
