What's left behind the scenes

  • In the 1990s, Dan Aykroyd envisioned sending the Ghostbusters to hell in the 3rd film. The idea was later abandoned, otherwise the American Film Association would have given the film a "PG-13" rating (under 13s admitted only with parents), and the British Board of Film Classification would have given it a "12" rating (for those aged 12 and over).
  • Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman who directed the first "Ghostbusters" (1984), was once asked if he was considering rebooting the franchise. Reitman joked that, judging by his previous directorial work, the new Ghostbusters film would just be people talking.
  • Production of the third Ghostbusters film stalled for almost 15 years, until director Paul Feig took on the task of rebooting the franchise.
  • At the very beginning of work on the film, rumors circulated that one of the roles (allegedly the role of the doctor, Anna) would be offered to Anne Hathaway.
  • In Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters 2" (1989), one of the minor characters tells parapsychologist Peter Venkman that the end of the world will come on February 14, 2016. The premiere of the 3rd film in the Ghostbusters franchise was scheduled for 2016.
  • This is Melissa McCarthy's fourth collaboration with Paul Feig. She previously starred in "Bridesmaids" (2011), "The Heat" (2013), and "Spy" (2015).
  • Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Cecily Strong, who starred in the film, were all cast members of "Saturday Night Live." Melissa McCarthy hosted "Saturday Night Live" four times. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd also appeared in the show. Harold Ramis was once offered the opportunity to write for the show, but he was already working on a sketch show that aired on Canadian television and featured Rick Moranis, one of the writers of "Ghostbusters" (1984).
  • This is the third collaboration between Kristen Wiig and Paul Feig. The actress appeared in his first film, "Unaccompanied Minors" (2006), and in "Bridesmaids" (2011), which also starred Melissa McCarthy.
  • Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver all have cameo roles in the film. Aykroyd initially confirmed his appearance in the future film on "Facebook" and "Twitter," but then deleted the posts. When news leaked to the press that Murray and Aykroyd would be in the film, director Paul Feig confirmed on "Twitter" that Hudson and Weaver would also appear. Rick Moranis was also offered a cameo role, but he declined.
  • In an article published in the October issue of "Entertainment Weekly" magazine, Dan Aykroyd stated that the original cast members would play characters 'other than themselves' in the future film. This confirmed statements made by Paul Feig, the director and one of the writers, before filming began, that he didn't want to make a film 'in a universe where everyone is already accustomed to ghosts' (such as the Ghostbusters from the original 1984 cast).
  • As with the first "Ghostbusters" film (1984), the action of the upcoming movie will take place in New York. However, filming took place mostly in Boston (Massachusetts) and its surroundings, specifically in Boston's Chinatown, the town of Easton, and at the old "Southfield" military base. One of the streets at the latter was converted into a New York street – lampposts were installed and screens with green glow were set up for combined filming. A two-story building resembling an office building was the central object of filming.
  • Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Cecily Strong, who starred in the film, were members of the permanent cast of "Saturday Night Live". Melissa McCarthy hosted "Saturday Night Live" four times. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd also appeared on the show. Harold Ramis was once offered a writing position for the show, but he was already working on a sketch show that aired on Canadian television and starred Rick Moranis, one of the writers of "Ghostbusters" (1984).
  • In the 1990s, Dan Aykroyd considered sending the Ghostbusters to hell in the 3rd film. • Emma Stone turned down an offer to star in the Ghostbusters film. The actress said she liked the script, but she didn't want to get involved in a project that could turn into a series of films, almost immediately after filming in Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) and its sequel.
  • Some episodes were filmed in a mansion built by the Ames family on the site of the current Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. Some episodes of Martin Scorsese's 2009 thriller "Shutter Island" were also filmed there.
  • In Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters II" (1989), one of the minor characters tells parapsychologist Peter Venkman that the end of the world will come on February 14, 2016. The premiere of the 3rd film in the Ghostbusters franchise was scheduled for 2016.

Melissa McCarthy hosted "Saturday Night Live" four times. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd also appeared in the show. • In an article published in the October issue of "Entertainment Weekly," Dan Aykroyd stated that the original cast members would play characters different from their original roles in the future film. This statement confirmed Paul Feig's, the director and one of the writers, earlier comments before filming began that he didn't want to make a film “in a universe where everyone is already used to ghosts” (such as the Ghostbusters from the original 1984 cast).
