Beat Girl follows Jennifer, a rebellious teenager living in London with her divorced architect father, Paul. When Paul returns home with a new wife, Nichole, a woman from Paris who is not much older than his daughter, Jennifer resents the marriage and sets out to make her stepmother's life difficult. Her resentment hardens into a campaign to undermine the couple, and when she learns that Nichole has connections to a dancer at a club across the street, she uses that knowledge to put her father in an awkward position. Meanwhile, Kenny, the club's owner, takes an interest in Jennifer.
Edmond T. Gréville directed the film, from a screenplay by Dail Ambler, with George Willoughby producing for Willoughby Film Productions and Renown Pictures Corporation. The cast includes David Farrar, Noëlle Adam, Christopher Lee and Gillian Hills, alongside Adam Faith and Shirley Anne Field, with 44 credited performers in all. Jazz and rock'n'roll numbers, performed by Faith, run through the club scenes that make up much of Jennifer's world.
Released in the United Kingdom in August 1960, the film runs 88 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from around 1,400 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.9 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audiences agree closely on the film, placing it among the modestly received British dramas of its period rather than at the top of its genre.
