What's left behind the scenes

  • Austrian actress Maria Schell (1926-2005) learned the script in Italian and delivered all her lines in Italian during filming, earning the respect of both Italian actors and the crew. Later, it was decided not to dub her lines with an Italian actress, although this was usually done in such cases.
  • When it was necessary to clearly show the characters against a somewhat hazy nighttime background, director Luchino Visconti (1906-1976) and cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno (1923-2021) did not use filters on the lenses. Instead, they used tulle hanging from the ceilings on the soundstages, behind which they placed streetlights.
