Short description

A young man named Mario meets a woman named Natalia, who spends her evenings waiting on a canal bridge for the return of a man she loves. This man had promised to return after one year, and Natalia remains devoted to him. As Mario and Natalia spend time together, he falls in love with her and attempts to win her affection, leading the woman to struggle between her loyalty to her absent partner and her growing feelings for Mario. This Italian-French drama is an adaptation of a novel by Dostoevsky.

The film was directed by Luchino Visconti and is the fifth of 15 films he directed, following Senso and preceding Rocco and His Brothers. The screenplay was written by Visconti and Suso Cecchi d'Amico. The main cast features Marcello Mastroianni as Mario and Maria Schell as Natalia, with Jean Marais in a supporting role.

The production was a collaboration between Vides Cinematografica, Cinematografica Associati, and Intermondia Films. The movie has been well received by both viewers and professionals. It holds a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDb based on 10,000 votes and 7.4/10 on TMDB from 264 votes. Film critics provided a higher evaluation, giving the movie a rating of 9.4/10 from 9 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Austrian actress Maria Schell (1926-2005) learned the script in Italian and delivered all her lines in Italian during filming, earning the respect of both Italian actors and the crew. Later, it was decided not to dub her lines with an Italian actress, although this was usually done in such cases.
  • When it was necessary to clearly show the characters against a somewhat hazy nighttime background, director Luchino Visconti (1906-1976) and cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno (1923-2021) did not use filters on the lenses. Instead, they used tulle hanging from the ceilings on the soundstages, behind which they placed streetlights.
