Block-Heads

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy play versions of themselves in this 1938 comedy. Stan has been standing guard in a French trench since the First World War, left behind when his unit moved out and never told that the fighting had ended. Twenty years later, in 1938, he is still at his post and brings down a passing aircraft, whose pilot arranges his return to the United States. Ollie, meanwhile, has married and is marking his wedding anniversary when he spots his old friend's photograph in a newspaper. He collects Stan from the veterans' home and brings him back to his apartment, where the reunion disrupts the household and sets off a series of mishaps.

John G. Blystone directed, working from a screenplay by Felix Adler, Arnold Belgard and James Parrott, with Hal Roach producing for Hal Roach Studios. The film runs under an hour. Blystone's directing credits also include Our Hospitality and Sharp Shooters. Alongside the two leads, the cast features Patricia Ellis, Minna Gombell, Billy Gilbert and James Finlayson.
