Camille

Set in Paris in 1847, Camille centres on Marguerite Gautier, a courtesan who moves through a world of gambling houses and extravagant parties where wealthy men hold the power. Her life changes when she meets Armand Duval, a young man whose attentions she returns, and the two begin a romance. Their happiness is complicated by Armand's father, who appeals to Marguerite to give up his son, and by the persistent Baron de Varville, whose wealth can secure her a comfortable existence. Marguerite's feelings for Armand prove difficult to set aside.

George Cukor directed the film, the second of the seventeen features he made, following Little Women and preceding Romeo and Juliet. Greta Garbo plays Marguerite, with Robert Taylor as Armand, Lionel Barrymore as Monsieur Duval, and Henry Daniell as the Baron. James Hilton, Frances Marion and Zoe Akins wrote the screenplay, and Irving Thalberg and Bernard H. Hyman produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on a budget of about one million dollars. The film runs 109 minutes.

Camille drew a critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 22 reviews, while audiences give it 7.3 on IMDb from around 9,500 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. The worldwide box office matched the production budget.
