Short description
In 1853, as the British and Russian empires compete to gain and maintain their place in the dreadful Great Game of political intrigues and alliances whose greatest prize is the domination of India and the border territories, Major Geoffrey Vickers must endure several betrayals and misfortunes before he can achieve his revenge at the Balaclava Heights, on October 25, 1854, the most glorious day of the Crimean War.
What's left behind the scenes
- More than two hundred horses died during the filming of the movie, which led the US Congress to pass a new law on the protection of animals used in film production. Additionally, there were human casualties: one of the stuntmen died during a battle scene when he fell from his horse directly onto the blade of a rapier.
- In the original script, the primary cause of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade in Crimea during the Crimean War was attributed to the real-life siege of the British fort at Cawnpore (which ended with the massacre of all survivors) during the Sepoy Mutiny (1857-1859). Shortly before the film's release, someone noticed that the Sepoy Mutiny occurred three years AFTER the Crimean War (1853-1856). The fort was hastily renamed, and the besiegers—instead of mutinous Indian army soldiers—were changed to a tribe led by a fictional chief.
