Short description

Arnold and his classmates win a trip to San Lorenzo, the Central American country where his parents, both scientists, vanished years earlier. Once there, the group meets Eduardo, an old friend of the family, but the journey soon goes wrong: they are captured in the jungle by the pirate La Sombra, who believes Arnold holds the key to a mysterious treasure. To get everyone home, Arnold must follow the same dangerous route his parents took before they disappeared, while hoping to learn what became of them.

The film is an animated television movie based on Craig Bartlett's series Hey Arnold!, continuing the story from the show's ending, in which Arnold found his father's journal and a map of his parents' expedition. Raymie Muzquiz directs from a screenplay by Joe Purdy, Craig Bartlett and Laura Sreebny. Mason Vale Cotton voices Arnold, with Benjamin Flores Jr. as Gerald, Francesca Marie Smith as Helga, Anndi McAfee as Phoebe, Carlos Alazraqui as Eduardo and Alfred Molina as La Sombra, among a credited cast of 29. It runs 81 minutes and was produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Snee-Oosh Productions and Viacom Media Networks, in the United States and Korea.

The film holds a 7.4 rating on IMDb from around 4,000 votes, and a 7.6 on TMDB from roughly 200 votes, indicating a generally favorable response from viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Screenwriter Craig Bartlett, whose voice speaks through the ethnographer Miles, believed from the very beginning that Alfred Molina should voice the Shadow, and no one else.
  • Arnold and his classmates fly to San Lorenzo on a Tuck Air plane. It was named after Tuck Tucker, the creative director of the animated series "Hey Arnold!" (1996-2004).
  • In the scene where the sad Arnold walks through the park, a bearded man is sitting on a bench. This character is based on Toran Codell, the first actor to voice Arnold. When describing this character, the animators referred to him as 'hipster Toran'.
