Edward Norton specifically spent some time in one of Michigan's state prisons. Afterwards, on set, he wore the same hairstyle as the inmates, spoke with a similar accent, and used expressions common in their environment.
The prison scenes were filmed on the grounds of a state prison in southern Michigan. After its closure, the prison served as a location for numerous films, including Tony Goldwyn's crime drama 'Conviction' (2010).
Angus MacLachlan wrote the screenplay as a play; a single staged reading even took place in 2003.
