Short description

Jack Mabry is a parole officer nearing retirement who is assigned to review the case of Gerald "Stone" Creeson, a convicted arsonist seeking early release. Stone is a manipulative, talkative inmate who has little success persuading Jack on his own merits. He therefore turns to his wife, Lucetta, asking her to get close to the officer and influence him. What begins as a calculated scheme draws the three of them into a tangle of desire, faith and buried secrets in which Jack's stable home life, and his judgment, come under strain.

John Curran directed the film, which followed his 2006 release The Painted Veil in his filmography. The screenplay is by Angus MacLachlan, and the cast is led by Robert De Niro as Jack, Edward Norton as Stone and Milla Jovovich as Lucetta, with Frances Conroy as Madylyn and Enver Gjokaj and Pepper Binkley appearing as younger versions of the couple. The film runs 105 minutes.

Stone was made for a budget of 22 million USD and took about 9 million USD at the worldwide box office, a modest return on its production cost. Audiences were lukewarm: it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 44,000 votes and 5.3 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 104 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, though all three measures sit in middling territory.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Edward Norton specifically spent some time in one of Michigan's state prisons. Afterwards, on set, he wore the same hairstyle as the inmates, spoke with a similar accent, and used expressions common in their environment.
  • The prison scenes were filmed on the grounds of a state prison in southern Michigan. After its closure, the prison served as a location for numerous films, including Tony Goldwyn's crime drama 'Conviction' (2010).
  • Angus MacLachlan wrote the screenplay as a play; a single staged reading even took place in 2003.
