Short description
G.I. Jane follows Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, a U.S. Navy intelligence officer who is selected as the first woman to enter the branch's elite combat training program. The opportunity comes through the political maneuvering of Senator Lillian DeHaven, and it is not offered in good faith. O'Neil reports to the brutal selection course for Navy SEAL candidates, where roughly sixty percent of the men who begin it fail to finish. There she faces the open hostility of the instructors, above all Master Chief John James Urgayle, and the resentment of her fellow trainees. Beyond the physical ordeal, she must contend with political interests that are prepared to see her fail. The film is directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Twohy and Danielle Alexandra, with Demi Moore also producing.
Released in 1997, G.I. Jane came between White Squall and Gladiator, the tenth of the thirty-four films Scott has directed. Moore leads the cast as O'Neil, with Viggo Mortensen as Urgayle, alongside Morris Chestnut, Josh Hopkins, David Vadim and Jim Caviezel among fifty-nine credited performers and a crew of 186. Made for about 50 million dollars, it returned roughly 48 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 93,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from just under two thousand. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from thirty-eight reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Ridley Scott, Sam Rockwell was initially cast for one of the roles in the film and even rehearsed for a while before being forced to leave the project due to either illness or injury.
- Candidates for training in special forces units write essays while in a state of physical exhaustion, experiencing hunger and sleep deprivation. At this time, in the next room, Viggo Mortensen's character reads “Twilight Land” (1974), the debut novel by Nobel laureate J.M. Coetzee about methods of psychological warfare during the Vietnam War.
- Some footage of submarines was provided by Ridley Scott's brother, Tony Scott (1944-2012); it remained unused after the editing of his 1995 film, 'Crimson Tide'.
- A room on the grounds of one of the training camps in Florida, where parachutes for jumps were stored, served as the barracks.
- Shortly before filming began, Demi Moore attempted to contact US President Bill Clinton and ask him to instruct the US Department of Defense to assist in the production of the film. Her attempt was unsuccessful.
- Viggo Mortensen prepared for the role of Sergeant Argyle separately from Demi Moore and the other actors, who were training in a camp in Florida. Mortensen observed the training of military personnel at the Naval Base Coronado in California and often spoke with former and current members of the Navy SEALs. The actors, with the exception of Moore, were extremely unhappy that they had to actually train while Mortensen was "somewhere relaxing." Mortensen was counting on achieving this reaction.
- The award in the book of poetry at the end of the film is the Navy Cross, the second highest award for valor in combat (only surpassed by the Medal of Honor, the highest US military award).
- In reality, another 19 years passed before women began to be accepted into the special forces units of the US Navy. Training for women to serve in the Navy’s special forces began only in March 2016. 99.99% of candidates are unable to complete the training course.
