Short description
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finds the team living on Knowhere, but their settled life is disturbed when the turbulent history of Rocket resurfaces. Peter Quill, still struggling with the loss of Gamora, has to bring his scattered comrades together for a mission to protect one of their own. If they fail, it could mean the end of the Guardians as they exist.
James Gunn wrote and directed this third Guardians instalment, following the two earlier films in the series as well as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Chris Pratt returns as Peter Quill, with Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis and Vin Diesel providing the voice of Groot. Kevin Feige produced. At 150 minutes it is the longest of Gunn's Guardians films, and the scale is reflected in a budget of 250 million dollars and a worldwide gross of 846 million dollars. It drew a 7.2 out of 10 from critics across 410 reviews, while audiences were warmer: 7.9 on IMDb from 466,000 votes and the same 7.9 on TMDB from 8,841 votes. The film sits between The Suicide Squad and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in Gunn's filmography and precedes Superman in 2025.
What's left behind the scenes
- After Hanna was fired, a large-scale campaign in his support unfolded online, and a petition to reinstate Hanna as director garnered over 30,000 signatures. Many celebrities also spoke out in support of Hanna, including the entire cast of the film "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and others.
- When James Gunn was removed from his position as director of the upcoming blockbuster, actor Dave Bautista stated that he would terminate his contract if the screenplay written by Gunn wasn't used in the film.
- Cosmo in this film is voiced by a woman in memory of Laika (1954-1957), the first animal to go into space.
- The film set a record for the number of prosthetics used in the actors' makeup. Over 23,000 prosthetics were used to make up over 100 actors.
- George MacKay, Regé-Jean Page, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Aaron Pierre auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock.
- James Gunn based the images of the High Evolutionary and his Anti-Earth on the 1896 novel "The Island of Doctor Moreau" by H.G. Wells (1866-1946). Gunn is a big fan of Earl S. Kenton's (1896-1980) 1932 film adaptation of Wells' novel, "The Island of Lost Souls".
