Moss Rose

In Victorian London, a music-hall dancer is found dead, a moss rose marking a page in a Bible beside her body. A fellow chorus girl, Belle, saw a gentleman leaving the victim's lodgings that morning and decides to confront him. She threatens to take her story to the police unless he agrees to her terms. He first offers her money, then a large sum in banknotes, but money is not what she wants. Belle, who has long dreamed of living as a lady, asks only to spend two weeks at his country estate. The arrangement draws her into the household of Michael Drego and his mother, Lady Margaret, while a police inspector pursues the murder inquiry.

Gregory Ratoff directed the film, which sits between Wife, Husband and Friend and Black Magic in his filmography. Jules Furthman and Tom Reed wrote the screenplay, and Gene Markey produced it for 20th Century Fox. Peggy Cummins plays Belle, with Victor Mature as Michael Drego and Ethel Barrymore as Lady Margaret Drego.
