Short description

Set in the early twentieth century, Jungle Cruise follows botanist Lily Houghton as she travels from London to the Amazon rainforest in search of a tree said to possess remarkable healing powers. She secures passage aboard a run-down riverboat captained by Frank Wolff, a charming but unreliable skipper, and is joined by her brother McGregor. What begins as a straightforward expedition soon brings the travellers up against the perils of the river and jungle, and against a rival German expedition pursuing the same prize.

The film is a fantasy adventure inspired by the Disney theme park attraction of the same name. Jaume Collet-Serra directed it, the ninth of the thirteen features he has made in chronological order, arriving between The Commuter and Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson, who also produced, plays Frank, with Emily Blunt as Lily, Jack Whitehall as McGregor, Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim, Edgar Ramírez as Lope de Aguirre and Paul Giamatti as Nilo Nemolato. Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and Michael Green wrote the screenplay.

Released in July 2021, the film cost about 200 million dollars to make and returned roughly 221 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from over 207,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.3 from a much smaller base of about 6,000. A critics' score of 6 out of 10 from 347 reviews places it close to the audience figure on IMDb and below the TMDB average.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Disney producers had long intended to make a film based on the corresponding theme park attraction – dating back to the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl".
  • Emily Blunt twice declined to participate in the project due to fatigue after filming "Mary Poppins Returns" and "A Quiet Place Part II". Director Jaume Collet-Serra personally flew to New York, where he met with the actress and explained why he wanted to work specifically with her. He brought with him a video message from Dwayne Johnson, in which he praised the project and also expressed a desire to star alongside her.
