A history professor travels to the American West for health reasons, where he is taken hostage by Solomon Bennet and his gang of outlaws. While the academic is initially repelled by the criminal nature of his captor, he gradually becomes fascinated by their violent lifestyle. Over time, the professor undergoes a personality shift, eventually replacing the gang leader and ruling the group with his own form of ruthless efficiency.

The film features a cast of 40 credited performers, led by Gian Maria Volonté as the professor and Tomas Milian as the outlaw leader, alongside William Berger, Jolanda Modio, Gianni Rizzo, and Carole André.
