After his wife's death, Early Landry, a middle-aged man from small-town Mississippi, loses his bearings and sinks into grief. His concerned sister Laurette pushes him to start over, and he moves into a rundown apartment in Hollywood, where he meets Freda Von Rhenburg, a transgender sex worker who lives nearby. The two form an unlikely friendship built on openness with each other, but the relationship proves harder for Early's family to accept than either of them expected.
