Chhichhore
Short description
Chhichhore follows a group of university friends who were once inseparable, and traces how their lives move into middle age and take separate directions. The story frames their shared past against a present-day situation involving the child of two of the friends, bringing the old circle back together as they recall their college years in the 1990s.
Sushant Singh Rajput plays Anirrudh "Anni" Pathak and Shraddha Kapoor plays Maya Pathak, with Tahir Raj Bhasin, Varun Sharma, Naveen Polishetty and Tushar Pandey among the former classmates. Nitesh Tiwari directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Mehrotra, and it followed his earlier features Chillar Party and Dangal in his filmography. Produced by Star Studios and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, it runs 146 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.
The film was released in September 2019. Made on a budget of about 7 million US dollars, it went on to take roughly 29 million worldwide, a return well above its cost. On IMDb it holds 8.3 out of 10 from about 72,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 7.7 from around 193 votes, showing strong approval from the larger audience base and a somewhat lower, still positive, score from the smaller group.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tahir Raj Bhasin, who does not smoke, had to play a character who smokes. The problem was solved by using cigarettes stuffed with basil and green tea leaves instead of tobacco.
- Tahir Raj Bhasin plays a gifted athlete. To achieve the necessary physique, the actor had to practice sports such as football, volleyball, and kabaddi (an Asian team game incorporating elements of wrestling and tag) for 4-5 hours a day under the guidance of experienced coaches. He spent a month building muscle mass, but by his own admission, the hardest part was racing against members of the national team.
