The Hole
Short description
Four students at an exclusive British boarding school, two girls and two boys, choose an abandoned Second World War bunker for a weekend of partying away from school rules. They seal themselves inside, but the plan goes wrong, and only one of them, Liz Dunn, comes back out eighteen days later, covered in blood and traumatised. A police psychologist, Dr Philippa Horwood, tries to piece together what happened underground from Liz's fragmented memories, while the fate of the other three remains unclear.
The Hole is a British and French production directed by Nick Hamm, working from a screenplay by Ben Court and Caroline Ip. It draws on Guy Burt's novel of the same name. Thora Birch plays Liz, with Desmond Harrington, Keira Knightley and Laurence Fox as the friends who descend with her, and Embeth Davidtz as the psychologist. The film runs 102 minutes and belongs to the crime, drama, horror and thriller genres.
It was Hamm's first feature as director, followed chronologically by Godsend, Killing Bono, The Journey, Driven, Gigi & Nate and William Tell. Made for about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 8 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 from around 50,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from just over 900 votes, close to the critics' rating of 5.8 from 17 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the shower scene, many crew members happily walked around naked in front of 15-year-old Keira Knightley. Her line to one of them at the end of the scene was improvised.
- Tora Birch's fee was a seven-figure sum, as she had recently starred in "American Beauty" (Sam Mendes, 1999). Her presence in the film's cast helped secure the necessary funding for the project.
- Tora Birch specifically studied with a British accent and even spent some time at a boarding school to see if they would accept her as English.
- The film is based on Guy Burt's novel "The Hole" (After the Hole, 1993).
