After the film's release, the town of Saint-Tropez became incredibly popular with tourists.
The legend behind the film's creation: once, Jean Giro was relaxing on a beach in Saint-Tropez when his movie camera was stolen while he was swimming. When Giro went to the police station, he was told they didn't deal with such things. It was then that Jean Giro decided to make a film ridiculing the gendarmes of Saint-Tropez.
The scene with Fugasson, "The Hunt for Nudists," was later used in the film "The Gendarme on Vacation."
