The Gendarme in New York

Ludovic Cruchot, a gendarme from Saint-Tropez, is chosen along with several colleagues to represent France at an international police congress in New York. The trip takes the men far from their usual beat, and their unfamiliarity with the country and its language leaves them out of their depth. Unknown to Cruchot, his daughter Nicole has come along as a stowaway, determined to see America despite her father's refusal to bring her. Her illegal presence in the city puts his position at the congress at risk, and he sets out to send her home while keeping the situation from his superiors.

Jean Girault directed the film, the fourth of the thirteen features he made in chronological order, following Let's Rob the Bank and preceding The Exchange Student. Louis de Funès leads as Cruchot, with Michel Galabru as Gerber and Christian Marin, Guy Grosso and Michel Modo among the gendarmes; Alan Scott also appears. The credited cast numbers twenty-two. Gérard Beytout and René Pignières produced for SNC, and the film runs 95 minutes.

Released in October 1965, the comedy holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 9,200 votes, and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 577 votes. Audience scores on both platforms place it as a moderately regarded entry, and the much larger vote count on IMDb reflects the film's broad and lasting following.
