Mr. Lucky centres on Joe Adams, a gambler and con man who takes on the identity of a dead gangster to avoid military service during wartime. He talks his way into a charity organisation raising relief funds for war victims, intending to divert the money to bankroll an illegal gambling venture. His scheme runs into trouble when he meets Dorothy Bryant, a wealthy woman involved with the charity, and falls in love with her. His feelings complicate a plan that had seemed straightforward.
The 1943 American production was directed by H. C. Potter, with a screenplay by Milton Holmes and Adrian Scott and David Hempstead producing for RKO Radio Pictures. Cary Grant leads as Joe Adams, opposite Laraine Day as Dorothy Bryant. Charles Bickford, Gladys Cooper, Alan Carney and Henry Stephenson appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 67. The film runs 100 minutes and mixes comedy, crime and romance.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 from a much smaller base, so the audience scores agree closely even though the voting numbers differ greatly in scale.
