Short description
Unhappy after his new baby sister displaces him, four-year-old Kun begins meeting people and pets from his family's history in their unique house in order to help him become the big brother he was meant to be.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Artist Makoto Tanijiri conceived of the family home with multiple floors and a staircase that plays a significant role in the composition. He noted that a child would be able to see the room below from the garden, while an adult would only see what is directly in front of them. Moreover, the view visible to the child will change as they grow and mature.
  • Director and screenwriter Mamoru Hosoda worked on the film based on his own life experience. He did not have any siblings, so the childhood jealousy that arises with the appearance of a baby in the family was something new for him. Mirai and Kun (voiced by Haru Kuroki and Moka Kamishiraishi, respectively) are directly based on Hosoda’s children.
