Mirai

Mirai centres on Kun, a four-year-old boy whose comfortable life is upended when his baby sister arrives and takes up most of his parents' time and attention. Jealous and unsettled, he retreats to the garden of the family home, where the large tree becomes a gateway to a fantastical realm in which past and future overlap. There he meets relatives at different points in their lives, including his mother as a young girl, his great-grandfather as a vigorous young man, and his sister Mirai as a teenager. These encounters gradually shift how Kun sees his family and his new role as an older brother.

The film is a Japanese animated feature directed and written by Mamoru Hosoda, his tenth feature and the one following The Boy and the Beast. It was produced by Yuichiro Saito, Takuya Ito and Genki Kawamura through Studio Chizu, with Nippon Television Network Corporation, KADOKAWA and D.N. Dream Partners among the production companies. The voice cast includes Moka Kamishiraishi as Kun, Haru Kuroki as Mirai, Gen Hoshino as the father, Kumiko Aso as the mother, Mitsuo Yoshihara and Yoshiko Miyazaki. Around ninety crew members and twenty-five credited cast members worked on the 98-minute film.

Released in July 2018, Mirai took about 30 million US dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 85 reviews, alongside 7 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 20,000 votes and 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB from 889 votes, indicating a modest gap between critics' ratings and audience ratings on IMDb.
