Rod Slater takes over as the manager of the Sonderditch gold mine, unaware that he is being used as a tool for a corporate conspiracy. Unscrupulous owners plan to inflate the international price of gold by intentionally flooding the mine. To achieve this, they task Slater with drilling into an underground lake, a move that threatens the lives of thousands of workers for the sake of market speculation.

Directed by Peter R. Hunt, this action thriller is the second film in his directorial career, following On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The movie stars Roger Moore in the lead role, alongside Susannah York, Ray Milland, John Gielgud, Bradford Dillman, and Tony Beckley. Produced by Michael Klinger and written by Wilbur Smith and Stanley Price, the project was a United Kingdom production from Killarney Film Studios and Avton Films.
