Short description

Spring of 1918. Tarakanov, managing the estate of Prince Tikhvinsky, with the help of a former court fencing teacher Marquess and a street kid Keshka, is stealing a collection of paintings and sculptures from the abandoned estate owners. Hoping to transport her abroad, criminals wander with a circus troupe, and in their wake goes a tireless criminal investigator — Makar Ovchinnikov.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the editing scripts, the film was titled 'Property of the Republic' (with the second word capitalized), but cinematic tradition reduced 'Republic' to a lowercase letter.
  • The renowned Soviet animator Yuri Norstein participated in the special effects shots.
  • The final film role of Olga Zhizneva.
  • In terms of attendance, it ranks 44th among domestic films in the entire history of Soviet cinema distribution.
  • Spartak Mishulin nearly perished during filming. In one episode, he and a circus performer were supposed to walk across a tightrope high above the ground. However, the rope sagged and the actors fell—fortunately, not to the ground, but onto a monastery roof. The circus performer, suffering from numerous fractures, was flown to Moscow, while Mishulin spent a long time recovering in a local hospital.
  • Andrey Mironov had many horseback riding scenes and was expected to practice with the stunt team every day, but the actor refused the training, arguing that he had been 'on a horse since the age of three.' A few days later, as proof, Mironov brought photos to the set showing him riding a wooden hobbyhorse. On the back of one of the photographs, it was written: 'Andryushenka is 3 years old. The horse was a gift from Utesov.'
  • The camel used in the film, nicknamed the 'Chinese Provocateur' due to its difficult temperament, took a dislike to Mironov and kept trying to either bite or spit on him. Circus performers suggested the reason for the animosity: to mask animal odors, the fastidious actor would pour liters of expensive cologne on himself. Once he was persuaded to give up the perfume, the camel's anger turned to mercy.
  • According to Yuri Entin, censors viewed the song lyric 'The ring of rapiers, like the ring of a glass, has caressed my ear since childhood' as propaganda for underage alcoholism.
