Sahara

Dale Gordon is a young American heiress whose father, an automobile manufacturer, dies before he can drive his new car in a gruelling cross-desert rally. Women are barred from the event, so Dale disguises herself as a man and takes his place at the wheel. The race across the Sahara brings her into contact with rival tribes and a gunrunner competing alongside her, and she is taken captive by a Bedouin chief, Rasoul, before another leader, Jaffar, intervenes. Her efforts to finish the rally continue against the backdrop of a conflict between the desert peoples.

Andrew V. McLaglen directed this 1983 British-American production, the sixteenth of his sixteen films in chronological order, following North Sea Hijack. Brooke Shields heads the cast as Dale, with Lambert Wilson as Jaffar, Horst Buchholz as Von Glessing, John Rhys-Davies as Rasoul and Ronald Lacey as Beg. James R. Silke wrote the screenplay, and Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan produced for Cannon Group alongside Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Made for about 12 million dollars, the film returned roughly a million worldwide, a wide gap between its cost and its theatrical earnings. Reception is split by audience: on IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from a small number of votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9/10 from a similarly modest sample.
