What's left behind the scenes

  • Riding the wave of success from "Independence Day" (1996), 20th Century Fox paid Dean Devlin a substantial sum to write a script for a sequel. Devlin wrote the script but, instead of delivering it to the studio, returned the advance. He felt that his sequel script did not live up to the standard of the first film. Almost 15 years later, Devlin reunited with Roland Emmerich and made a second attempt, which they both felt was successful.
  • On Wednesday, March 4, 2015, director Roland Emmerich confirmed that Jeff Goldblum would reprise his role as David Levinson in "Independence Day: Resurgence" (2016).
  • 20th Century Fox officially greenlit the project on November 27, 2014.
  • This is the second film that director Roland Emmerich and actress Sela Ward have worked on together. The first was the disaster film "The Day After Tomorrow" (2004).
  • Some scenes were filmed on the dried-up Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah. The landscapes of the dried lake can also be seen in other films: "Con Air" by Simon West (1997), "John Carter" by Andrew Stanton (2012), "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" by Gore Verbinski (2007), "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick (2010), "The World's Fastest Indian" by Roger Donaldson (2005), and "Independence Day" (1996).
  • This is the first sequel in Roland Emmerich's directing career.
  • The film was shot in an anamorphic film format (a type of widescreen cinematic system using optical anamorphic images during filming and projection). The first "Independence Day" film (1996) was shot in "Super 35" format (a cinematic system that involves using standard 35mm film and spherical cinematography).
  • Liam Hemsworth turned down an offer to star in Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac: Part I" (2013) and "Nymphomaniac: Part II" (2013), where he was to play the role of Joe's lover, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg. Hemsworth and Gainsbourg starred together in "Independence Day: Resurgence".
  • The role of Captain Steven Hiller was initially intended for Will Smith, however, the film company "20th Century Fox" decided to forgo his services when the actor requested a $50 million fee for filming in two sequels. In an interview with the "Daily News" in June 2013, Roland Emmerich confirmed Smith's absence from the sequel, but stated that Jeff Goldblum would reprise his role as David Levinson. Mae Whitman replaced Maeve Monroe in the role of Patricia Whitmore. Whitman did not comment on the matter. She simply re-tweeted an article on her page titled "Regarding Mae Whitman's Absence from the 'Independence Day 2' Cast," which hinted that she hadn't even been offered the chance to reprise her character from the first film. The filmmakers did not extend a similar offer to Ross Bagley, who played Dylan Dubrow in "Independence Day" (1996).
  • Jessie Usher played the role of Will Smith's character's adopted son in the film, and Liam Hemsworth played the role of the son-in-law of former US President Bill Pullman.
  • Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Robert Loggia, and John Storey were the only actors from the cast of Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day" (1996) who reprised their roles in the 2016 sequel (as David Levinson, Whitmore, Julius Levinson, Dubrow-Hiller, Oka, General Gray, and Dr. Isaac, respectively).
  • Susan Sarandon found the script she was sent incoherent and declined the role in the film.
  • A storm of indignation erupted on social media when it was announced that the role of Bill Pullman's character's daughter, played by Mae Whitman in "Independence Day" (1996), would be played by Maeve Monroe in the sequel. Whitman's friend, actress and singer Anna Kendrick, was particularly outspoken on "Twitter." According to popular opinion, the filmmakers decided that Whitman was "not good enough" to appear in the sequel. Whitman herself, whose acting career began in 1994 and includes the successful comedy "The DUFF" (2015) by Ari Sandel, is refusing to comment.
  • Following the deaths of James Rebhorn in 2012 and Robert Loggia in 2015, who played Albert Nimzicki and William Gray in the film *Independence Day* (1996), these characters will not appear in the sequel.
  • David Arnold, the composer for Roland Emmerich's *Independence Day* (1996), wrote on Twitter that he was not offered to collaborate on *Independence Day: Resurgence* (2016), and that the composers hired for the sequel could use his music from the first film, since the studio still owned the rights to it.
  • When Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher) arrives for a meeting with the President and Secretary of Defense at the beginning of the film, a large portrait of his father hangs to the right of the entrance to the office. This photograph of Will Smith was one of the promotional posters for the original film.
  • Colonel Hiller died during a test flight of an alien hybrid fighter several years before the events depicted in the second film. His bravery in repelling the first alien invasion in 1996, when he destroyed the enemy mothership, made Hiller a favorite of the entire planet. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.
  • Work on a sequel to *Independence Day* (1996) began shortly after its release. Connecting the sequel to the first film proved to be a difficult task, as the filmmakers tried to convey the idea that the alien civilization with a collective consciousness had perished. One of the options considered was making some changes to the first film to logically justify the sequel's plot. According to a 1996 press leak, in the second film Dylan Hiller, leading a small squad, uses alien technology and goes to meet the second wave of alien invasion, while President Whitmore continues to maintain telepathic contact with the alien intelligence. According to unconfirmed reports, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich refused to work on the sequel after a dispute with the film company's management, when Fox TV put an end to their project *Visitor*.
  • Riding the wave of success from the film “Independence Day” (1996), the 20th Century Fox film company paid Dean Devlin a substantial sum to write a screenplay for a sequel. Devlin wrote the screenplay, but instead of submitting it to the film company, he returned the advance. He felt that the sequel screenplay he had written did not live up to the level of the first film. It wasn’t until almost 15 years later that Devlin met with Roland Emmerich again and made a second attempt, which they both decided was successful.
