Short description
Two decades after hostile aliens nearly wiped out humanity, Earth's nations have united around a defense program built from the recovered technology of the invaders. The resulting planetary shield is formidable, yet it proves no match for a new assault carried out with weapons and ships far beyond anything seen before. As extinction looms again, a small group of pilots, scientists and former leaders must find a way to strike back.
Roland Emmerich directed and co-wrote the film with Dean Devlin and James Vanderbilt, and produced it with Harald Kloser. It is the thirteenth of the fifteen features Emmerich has directed, arriving between Stonewall and Midway. Liam Hemsworth plays pilot Jake Morrison, Jeff Goldblum returns as David Levinson, and Jessie T. Usher appears as Dylan Hiller, alongside Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe and Travis Tope.
Made for about 165 million dollars and released in June 2016, the film took in roughly 390 million dollars worldwide. It drew a 5.2 rating on IMDb across some 199,000 votes and a 5.4 on TMDB from about 6,600 votes, while the critics' score stands at 4.3 out of 10 from 232 reviews, lower than either audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the first sequel in Roland Emmerich's directing career.
- The role of Captain Steven Hiller was initially intended for Will Smith, however, the film company "20th Century Fox" decided to forgo his services when the actor requested a $50 million fee for filming in two sequels. In an interview with the "Daily News" in June 2013, Roland Emmerich confirmed Smith's absence from the sequel, but stated that Jeff Goldblum would reprise his role as David Levinson. Mae Whitman replaced Maeve Monroe in the role of Patricia Whitmore. Whitman did not comment on the matter. She simply re-tweeted an article on her page titled "Regarding Mae Whitman's Absence from the 'Independence Day 2' Cast," which hinted that she hadn't even been offered the chance to reprise her character from the first film. The filmmakers did not extend a similar offer to Ross Bagley, who played Dylan Dubrow in "Independence Day" (1996).
- Jessie Usher played the role of Will Smith's character's adopted son in the film, and Liam Hemsworth played the role of the son-in-law of former US President Bill Pullman.
- Susan Sarandon found the script she was sent incoherent and declined the role in the film.
- When Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher) arrives for a meeting with the President and Secretary of Defense at the beginning of the film, a large portrait of his father hangs to the right of the entrance to the office. This photograph of Will Smith was one of the promotional posters for the original film.
- Colonel Hiller died during a test flight of an alien hybrid fighter several years before the events depicted in the second film. His bravery in repelling the first alien invasion in 1996, when he destroyed the enemy mothership, made Hiller a favorite of the entire planet. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.
- Riding the wave of success from the film “Independence Day” (1996), the 20th Century Fox film company paid Dean Devlin a substantial sum to write a screenplay for a sequel. Devlin wrote the screenplay, but instead of submitting it to the film company, he returned the advance. He felt that the sequel screenplay he had written did not live up to the level of the first film. It wasn’t until almost 15 years later that Devlin met with Roland Emmerich again and made a second attempt, which they both decided was successful.

- An outcry erupted on social media when it was announced that Maika Monroe would play the role of Bill Pullman's character's daughter, which was played by Mae Whitman in "Independence Day" (1996), in the sequel. According to unconfirmed reports, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich refused to work on the sequel after a quarrel with the film company's management when Fox TV put an end to their project "The Visitor."
