The Addams Family
Short description
The Addams Family centers on Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the rest of their macabre household, who live by their own peculiar tastes and traditions. Their plans for a large gathering of extended relatives are disrupted by a reality-television host, Margaux Needler, who wants to sell homes throughout the neighborhood and sees the family's gloomy mansion as an obstacle to her ambitions. Her efforts to remove them from the community put her on a collision course with the family.
The 2019 animated feature was directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, working from a screenplay by Pamela Pettler and Matt Lieberman. Vernon's earlier directing credits include Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Sausage Party; Tiernan directed Sausage Party before this film. The voice cast includes Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester and Snoop Dogg as Cousin Itt. The production involved Bron Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, The Jackal Group and Cinesite Animation.
Made for about 40 million USD, the film took in roughly 204 million USD worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. Audience scores sit at 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb, based on about 49,000 votes, and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from around 2,541 votes. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 5.4 out of 10 across 159 reviews, below both audience ratings. The film later continued with The Addams Family 2 in 2021.
What's left behind the scenes
- In 2010, it was announced that Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures had acquired the rights to adapt the Addams Family comics. The characters were to be based on the original drawings by Charles Addams, with Tim Burton potentially writing the screenplay and directing. In July 2013, it was announced that this project would not go forward.
- Gomez and Morticia's car license plate reads 'ЧАС 1938' (Chas 1938). 'Chas' was the nickname of comic creator Charles Addams, and he began publishing comics in a New York newspaper in 1938.
- Unlike previous adaptations where this character was right-handed, here Thing is portrayed as left-handed. (The only exception is the 1960s series, where this character was sometimes right-handed and sometimes left-handed).
- This is the first animated film about the Addams Family in which Pugsley is voiced by a child. Previously, he was always voiced by adults.
- Morticia mentions a clown with balloons. This is a reference to Stephen King's novel 'It' (1986). A film adaptation was released in 2017, starring Finn Wolfhard. Here, he plays the role of Pugsley.
- In this film, the family moves to Westfield, New Jersey, where comic book author and character creator Charles Addams (1912-1988) grew up.
- The dry tree at the Addams family's mansion is named Ichabod – this is a reference to Washington Irving's story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” whose main character was named Ichabod Crane.
- Cousin Itt was voiced by rapper Snoop Dogg (born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.). This character first appeared on screen in Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 black comedy of the same name. At that time, he was listening to the rapper under the pseudonym M.C. Hammer (born Stanley Kirk Burrell).
- Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron recorded their lines separately and did not meet during the filming of the movie.
