The Beekeeper

A beekeeper named Spyros travels with his hives from northern Greece to the south in search of spring. Along the way, he encounters a young female drifter and develops a strange and self-destructive relationship with her. This journey through the Greek countryside involves encounters with various people, including his youngest daughter.

This 1986 drama was directed by Theo Angelopoulos, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Tonino Guerra and Dimitris Nollas. It is the first in a listed series of four films directed by Angelopoulos, followed by Landscape in the Mist, Eternity and a Day, and To Each His Own Cinema. The film stars Marcello Mastroianni as Spyros and Nadia Mourouzi as the girl, with a supporting cast that includes Serge Reggiani, Jenny Roussea, Dinos Iliopoulos, and Vasia Panagopoulou. A co-production between Greece, Italy, and France, the movie was produced by Theo Angelopoulos, Giuseppe Colombo, and Enzo Rispoli through companies including MK2 Films and the Greek Film Centre.
