Butterfly Kiss

Butterfly Kiss is a British crime drama from 1995. Eunice, a drifter with severe mental instability, travels through the bleak landscapes of northern England, committing violent acts against both men and women. She claims to be searching for a woman named Judith, though the purpose of this search remains unclear. At a petrol station she encounters Miriam, a lonely cashier, and chooses to spare her. Miriam, dissatisfied with her own life, leaves it behind to accompany Eunice on the road. As Eunice's crimes accumulate, Miriam helps conceal the evidence and tries to make sense of Eunice's obsession. The relationship between the two women takes on a romantic dimension, and their journey is marked by a growing burden of violence.

The film was directed by Michael Winterbottom, his first feature, followed by Jude in 1996. Frank Cottrell Boyce wrote the screenplay. Amanda Plummer plays Eunice and Saskia Reeves plays Miriam, with supporting turns from Kathy Jamieson, Des McAleer, Lisa Riley and Freda Dowie. It runs 88 minutes and was produced by Dan Films with British Screen Productions and the Merseyside Film Production Fund.
