Cloak & Dagger follows Davey Osborne, an eleven-year-old boy in San Antonio who retreats into video games and the company of an imaginary secret agent, Jack Flack, after his mother's death and with his father distracted by his own troubles. When Davey witnesses a murder and is handed a video game cartridge that actually holds classified government information, he is drawn into a real espionage chase. Adults, including his father and the police, do not believe his account, so he must rely on himself, his friend Kim, and his fictional hero to stay ahead of the people pursuing him.
The film was directed by Richard Franklin and released in 1984. It was his fifth feature, arriving between Psycho II and Link in the chronological list of his work, with a screenplay by Tom Holland and Allan Carr producing for Universal Pictures. Henry Thomas, then known for his role in E.T., plays Davey, while Dabney Coleman appears as both the imaginary Jack Flack and Davey's father, Hal Osborne, alongside Michael Murphy as Rice, Christina Nigra as Kim Gardener, and John McIntire and Jeanette Nolan as George and Eunice MacCready.
The film earned about 10 million dollars worldwide during its theatrical run. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from roughly 9,200 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.4 from 167 votes, indicating a modest but steady audience following rather than broad commercial success.
