This film follows two documentary filmmakers who travel back in time to the American South before the Civil War. Their goal is to record the slave trade and document the extreme violence, torture, and exploitation faced by enslaved people under their owners. The story uses a pseudo-documentary approach and historical documents to depict the harsh reality of this period.
The movie was directed and written by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, who also served as producers. This project followed their previous collaborations on Mondo Cane in 1962 and Africa Blood and Guts in 1966. The cast includes Susan Hampshire, Dick Gregory, and Stefano Sibaldi as the narrator, with voice roles performed by Cicely Browne and Geoffrey Copleston.
Produced by Medusa Film and Euro International Films, the production involved Haiti, Italy, and the United States. Since its release in 1971, the film has maintained a generally positive reception from viewers. It holds a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 2,100 votes and a 6.6/10 on TMDB from 76 votes.
