The Choirboys follows a group of Los Angeles police officers who deal with the strain of their jobs by spending their off-hours drinking and pursuing various forms of mischief. Their duties largely involve traffic and vice work in a run-down precinct, and their nighttime gatherings grow increasingly reckless. A violent incident during one of these outings brings the situation to a head.
Robert Aldrich directed the film, the sixteenth of the seventeen features he made and his first after The Longest Yard in 1974, followed later by ...All the Marbles. Charles Durning leads the cast as Spermwhale Whalen, alongside Louis Gossett Jr., Perry King, Clyde Kusatsu, Stephen Macht and Tim McIntire among the fifty-four credited performers. Christopher Knopf and Joseph Wambaugh wrote the screenplay, and Merv Adelson and Lee Rich produced.
Released in December 1977, the film had a budget of seven million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from around 2,100 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.4 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audience scores sit close together, indicating a similar overall response from viewers across both platforms.
