The Apple is a science-fiction musical comedy set in a version of 1994 where the entertainment industry dominates daily life. Bibi and Alphie, a young singing duo from Canada, travel to the United States for a major song competition and catch the attention of Mr. Boogalow, a powerful music mogul who offers them a contract. While Bibi is drawn into the world of fame, money and temptation, Alphie hesitates, setting up a conflict between ambition and staying true to oneself. The film was directed by Menahem Golan, who also wrote the screenplay and produced it with Yoram Globus through Cannon Group and Golan-Globus Productions. It was Golan's second directorial feature, following Diamonds in 1975 and preceding Enter the Ninja in 1981.
Catherine Mary Stewart and George Gilmour star as Bibi and Alphie, with Grace Kennedy, Allan Love, Vladek Sheybal and Joss Ackland in supporting roles. The production had a budget of around 10 million US dollars. Audience reception has been modest: on IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.3 out of 10 from roughly 3,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.5 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 65 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 out of 10, based on 11 reviews, is lower still. The film runs 88 minutes and was released in November 1980.
