Allonsanfan

Allonsanfan is set in Italy in 1816, during the period of conservative restoration that followed the Napoleonic era. Fulvio Imbriani, a nobleman and former Napoleonic officer, has long been active in a secret revolutionary society. Weary, ill and disillusioned by the apparent failure of the cause he gave his life to, he decides to withdraw to his family home and start over far from politics. His former comrades will not let him go so easily, and they press him back into service while he grows steadily more doubtful about what the struggle can achieve.

The film was directed and written by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, for whom it was the feature preceding Padre Padrone, and produced by Giuliani G. De Negri. Marcello Mastroianni plays Fulvio, with Lea Massari as Charlotte, Mimsy Farmer as Francesca, Laura Betti as Esther Imbriani, Claudio Cassinelli as Lionello and Benjamin Lev as Vanni. The film was made in Italy and runs 111 minutes.

Audience reception is solid rather than spectacular. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10, based on roughly 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. The wide gap in vote counts reflects a film that retains a steady following decades after its 1974 release, but has not reached a broad international audience.
